Dr. Benjamin Neel is the Research Director at The Princess Margaret and a Professor of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto. Dr. Neel is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Dr. Neel was recruited from his positions as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Cancer Biology program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston, MA. An internationally recognized expert in the field of cellular signal transduction, Dr. Neel has particular experience in biology regulation of protein-tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs). PTPs represent a large family of enzymes that play a very important role in cellular signaling within and between cells.

A charismatic leader, top scientist and experienced clinician, Dr. Neel understands how clinical care and science need to be integrated for the benefit of cancer patients. Dr. Neel is committed to translating the best research at The Princess Margaret into clinical outcomes.

Dr. Neel earned his Ph.D. in Viral Oncology from Rockefeller University in 1982, and his M.D. from Cornell University Medical School in 1983. His graduate work on oncogene activation by slowly transforming RNA tumor viruses was judged one of the 50 most important discoveries in cancer research by the journal Science.
